Product Overview
What is PntGuard Maritime?
PntGuard™ is a first-of-its-kind maritime security solution providing accurate positioning, resilience to GNSS threats, and enhanced safety at sea. This comprehensive navigational aid leverages the Iridium low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network and proven PNT technology to receive a secure PNT signal that is about 1,000 times more powerful than GNSS/GPS, complementing a vessel’s navigation feed. PntGuard enables users to maintain course integrity, safeguard crew and cargo, and deliver reliable performance, even in GNSS-contested environments and adversarial conditions.
What are some of the impacts of spoofing and jamming?
Using low-cost jamming and spoofing devices, attackers can make a ship’s systems show the ship miles off course, fake AIS tracks, and trigger bridge-system failures that jeopardize crew safety. The effects of these errors can include:
- Collisions and groundings
- Unintended entry into restricted waters
- Claims of sanctions evasion / calling at ports in sanctioned states
- Port delays / disruptions to cargo logistics
- Charter disputes and insurance challenges when a vessel appears to have breached compliance
What are the benefits, and what competitive advantage does PntGuard give operators?
Most solutions available today can only warn that GNSS/GPS is disrupted, but do not provide an alternative, authenticated, and trusted position. Our system issues visual and audio alerts to the crew and supplies verified backup coordinates to validate the ship’s true location against jamming or spoofing.
Optional premium features will include the device identifying real-time jamming/spoof zones, creating spoof event logs per vessel with replay and heatmaps, and integration with shipowners’ backends to provide an alternate AIS position feed when interference occurs.
What is included in the PntGuard system and how does it work?
Easy to install, PntGuard comprises an above-deck receiver that connects to the Iridium PNT service and a below-deck bridge display that shows both the falsified GPS track and the vessel’s true position in real time.
The solution complements a vessel’s GNSS/GPS navigation feed with an independent, resilient, and accurate situational awareness and immediately alerts the crew to manipulation or interruption via a visual and sound warning.
What are some other key features?
- Jamming and spoofing resilience
- 100% standalone system
- Course deviation warnings to captain/nav officer within seconds
- Alternative navigation coordinates provided to the bridge/captain
- Real-time vessel tracking
- Touchscreen with night mode
- Short Burst Data® capable
- Secure data transmission
- Pairs optionally with NAL Technologies’ (Naltec) cloud-based SkyRouter® solution for shipowner fleet-wide oversight
Technology, Validation and Readiness
What core technologies underpin this solution? How is this more reliable in commercial maritime environments than other solutions?
PntGuard is built on the same Naltec technology that enables APNT solutions for many aspects of critical infrastructure, including telecommunications networks, data centers, and utilities.
Enabled by the Iridium® low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, PntGuard receives a cryptographically secured PNT signal that is about 1,000 times more powerful than GNSS/GPS and is resilient to jamming and spoofing of those systems.
Where has PntGuard been field tested?
PntGuard features more than 10 years of APNT technology deployment expertise and is now in use in the maritime sector. PntGuard use has been thoroughly proven through multi-month sea trials with leading international shipowners – covering the globe with more than 100,000 NM sailed under real maritime conditions. It has also been proven through independent evaluations for three consecutive years at Jammertest in Andøya, Norway.
What tech development is behind PntGuard?
PntGuard is powered by Naltec’s ultra-small, embeddable Alternative Location and Timing Module (ALTM). With more than 13,000 deployed ALTM receivers worldwide, it represents the most mature Iridium APNT receiver technology available today.
GNSS Interference
What is Spoofing?
Spoofing is a more sophisticated attack in which counterfeit satellite signals are transmitted to imitate legitimate GNSS signals. Rather than losing position, the receiver calculates a false—but seemingly valid—position, course, or time without alerting the crew. This makes spoofing significantly more difficult to detect and potentially far more dangerous.
What is Jamming?
Jamming is the deliberate transmission of radio-frequency noise on GNSS frequencies to overwhelm legitimate satellite signals. The receiver can no longer calculate its position and typically generates a warning or loses its position fix entirely.
What is Meaconing?
Meaconing is a sophisticated form of signal manipulation in which legitimate GNSS signals are captured, delayed, and rebroadcast from another location. Unlike spoofing, the attacker does not generate counterfeit satellite signals—they retransmit genuine ones with a controlled delay.Because the signals remain authentic, traditional GNSS receivers often accept them as valid. The result is an incorrect position or timing solution that can be difficult to detect without an independent verification source. For commercial vessels, meaconing can cause gradual position offsets, navigation errors, and degraded situational awareness while appearing to operate normally.
What is the difference between GNSS and GPS?
GPS is the satellite navigation system operated by the United States. It is the most widely recognized positioning system, but it is only one of several Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) used worldwide.
GNSS is the collective term for all global satellite navigation systems, including:GPS (United States)Galileo (European Union)GLONASS (Russia)BeiDou (China)Modern maritime receivers typically use signals from several GNSS constellations simultaneously to improve availability and accuracy.
Availability & Market
When will the solution be commercially available?
PntGuard is available to order now. Submit sales inquiries via the contact form.
What is the pricing model, and how is the solution cost-effective for both large fleets and smaller operators?
Customers can choose different subscription forms for the product and build it according to their needs as a shipping company. The price model is based on improved discounts for larger quantity and longer-term service agreements. They can also choose if they would like to add a tracking service activation or not on their unit, or if they would like to activate this later.
What is involved in integration?
PntGuard is designed to meet commercial maritime shipping standards. There is no requirement for major platform redesign or operational disruption. Simple installation by a ship’s crew is proven through sea trials.
What is the schedule for deployment?
This mature, deployable system is available today for easy integration and without any dependency on future development milestones. There is also minimal training burden due to PntGuard’s operational maturity.
Who is the commercial provider of PntGuard Maritime?
SGM Technology AS, a Norwegian tech company based in Oslo, holds the exclusive commercial rights to PntGuard within the maritime industry. All maritime sales inquiries and customer agreements are handled by SGM Technology.
